Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

New Traffic Pattern: Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence are open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence: Waterfront Dr., from Warren Ave. to Crossover Rd., road closed for bridge demolition, Tues. night (Sept. 17) at 10 p.m. – Mon. morning (Sept. 23), at 11 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: Gano St., from India St. to the I-195 West on-ramp, road closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: I-195, from the Providence River Bridge to the Washington Bridge, lane closures for electrical work, Sun. – Tues. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.:

  • Sun. night: left lane closed EB
  • Mon. night: Two lanes closed EB plus the South Main St. on-ramp to I-195 East closed
  • Tues. night: Two lanes closed EB plus the Gano St on-ramp to I-195 West closed

I-95 15 Bridges Project, Providence to Warwick

Starting tonight, RIDOT is conducting its fourth rapid bridge installation this summer with the replacement of the I-95 southbound bridge over Elmwood Avenue in Providence. The bridge will be completely replaced over two weekends: this weekend, September 13-16 and next weekend, September 20-23.

The closures start each weekend at 8 p.m. on Fridays with all lanes open by 5 a.m. Monday morning. Additionally, the high-speed lane on I-95 North will be closed during these times.

Providence: I-95, from Broad St. to Rte. 10, two left lanes closed (I-95 South), and the left lane closed (I-95 North), for bridge replacement, Fri. night (Sept. 13) at 8 p.m. – Mon. morning, (Sept. 16) at 5 a.m. Please use alternate routes.

Providence: I-95 South, before the Elmwood Ave. off-ramp (Exit 34), there is a lane split with two lanes on either side of the split, Mon. – Fri. All lanes go through.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations. 

Providence: I-95, from Exit 38A to Exit 39A, alternating lane closures for median barrier removal and paving, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Providence: I-95 North, at the Exit 37 B/C/D interchange, various lane and exit closures as needed for electrical work and steel repairs, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Cumberland/Smithfield: I-295, from Exit 15B to Exit 15A + at Exit 22, alternating lane closures for bridge inspections, Tues., 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Providence: I-95 North, and the on-ramp to Memorial Blvd., lanes will shift for a bridge inspection, Mon., 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Providence: I-95 North, at the on-ramp from Rte. 6 East, lanes will shift for a bridge inspection, Thurs., 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.   

Warwick/West Warwick: I-295, at the Providence St. Bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge painting & miscellaneous construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work through late 2024.

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 NB through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Temporary Bridge Closure

Providence: The West River St. Bridge, from Corliss St. to Branch Ave., is closed to all traffic for approximately four months. Follow signed detours, noting a temporary traffic signal is in place at the intersection of Charles St. and West River St. to assist with added detour traffic.
