Interstate Highway Restrictions

I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge Rehabilitation

Motorists can expect the following changes:

I-295

  • Northbound and southbound service roads closed; access maintained to Exits 9A and 9C
  • I-295 North Exit 9B is closed

Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.)

  • Lane closed on the ramp from Rte. 6 West to I-295 North
  • Lane closures possible on both Rte. 6 and Rte. 6A at the I-295 overpasses through mid-summer
  • On-ramp closed from Rte. 6A West to I-295 South. Left turns permitted for nearby on-ramp normally used by Rte. 6A East traffic

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: I-95 North, from Exit 18 to Exit 19, lanes are currently shifted to the left. Please note: traffic entering the highway using the Allens Ave./Thurbers Ave. on-ramp to I-95 North must yield to traffic before merging onto the Interstate. Expect delays on the ramp; consider alternate routes during peak travel periods.

Temporary Exit Closures

Providence/East Providence: As part of ongoing repairs to the Washington Bridge Westbound, Exit 3 (Gano St.) off of I-195 West is closed through Fall 2019. Follow signed detour.

Providence/East Providence: I-195 West, from the Taunton Ave. on-ramp to Exit 2, right exit closed for barrier work, Sat. June 15 from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Warwick/East Greenwich: I-95 North at Exit 8A, exit closed for utility work, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Weekend

Johnston/Smithfield: I-295 South, from Rte. 44 to Greenville Ave., alternating lane closures in a moving operation for milling and paving, Fri. night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Cranston: I-295 North, from Exit 3A to the Phenix Ave. overpass, right lane closed for drainage work, Mon. night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-295 North and South, just before the Rte. 7 overpass, left and right lane closures for construction, Mon. and Tues. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Smithfield:
I-295 South, from Rte. 44 to Greenville Ave., alternating lane closures in a moving operation for milling, Tues.-Thurs. nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Delays possible.

Warwick: I-95 North and South, from Rte. 2 to the Service Rd., shoulder closures in a moving operation for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

West Greenwich: I-95 North and South, from Exit 5A to Exit 5B, alternating lane closures for construction, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with short-duration rolling roadblocks for steel girder placement possible after midnight each night.

Weekday

Cranston: I-95 North, from Park Ave. overpass to Rte. 10, right lane closed for drainage work, Wed. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Delays possible.

Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 19 to Exit 18, left lane closures in a moving operation for drainage work, Mon. from 4:30 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Providence:
I-95 South, from Exit 20 to I-195 East on-ramp, short duration rolling roadblock in a moving operation for a bridge inspection, Thurs. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Warwick:
I-95 South, just after the Jefferson Blvd. off-ramp, right lane closed for construction, during the early morning Mon. from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

West Greenwich: I-95 North, under Austin Farm Rd. Bridge, right shoulder closure for bridge work, Tues.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cranston/Johnston: I-295 South, under the Phenix Ave. Bridge, and I-295 South and North, under the Scituate Ave. Bridge, shoulder closures for construction through September 2019.

Cumberland: I-295 North and South, from Exit 20 to Exit 22, lane shifts to the right, with only two lanes of travel open in each direction for bridge work through Spring 2020.

Hopkinton/Richmond: I-95 North and South, from Exit 2 to Exit 3, lane shifts for bridge work through June 2020.

Providence/East Providence: Lane shifts are in place on I-195 West, from just after Broadway to the Washington Bridge, and I-195 East, from Pawtucket Ave. to the Mass. line.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

6/10 Interchange Project

Motorists can expect the following changes:

Rte. 6

  • Rte. 6 East, all traffic shifted onto the existing Rte. 6 West roadway just after the Hartford Ave. exit. Lanes are narrow.
  • The Broadway off ramp is closed.

Rte. 10

  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to the Tobey St. overpass, lane shift in place for through traffic and the Westminster St. off-ramp.

6/10 Connector

  • On Connector outbound a new lane split is in place for Rte. 10 South and Route 6 West, one-half mile before its original location. Lanes are narrow.

Affected City Streets

  • Traffic from the Tobey St./Harris Ave. on-ramp does not have direct access to Rte. 10 South. Follow detour signs.
  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours Monday-Friday.

Upcoming:  The Westminster St. on-ramp to Rte. 10 South will be closed this summer; reopening in Spring 2021.

Temporary Ramp Closure

Cranston: The off-ramp from Rte. 37 West to I-295 North will be closed for drainage work, Mon. night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Follow signed detour using Natick Ave.

New Traffic Pattern

Providence: A new traffic pattern is in place on Rte. 6 East and West, from Hartford Ave. to Killingly St. All lanes shift to the left and one of the three lanes will be closed for bridge construction through Spring 2021.

Overnight

Cranston: Rte. 37 East and West, from Natick Ave. to Oaklawn Ave., alternating lane closures for sign work, Sun.-Wed nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. 

East Greenwich/North Kingstown: Rte. 4 North and South, from Rte. 1 to I-95, watch out for crews in a moving operation for striping, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Eastbound will take place Sun. and Mon. nights
  • Westbound will take place Tues.-Thurs. nights

East Greenwich/North Kingstown: Rte. 403 East and West, from Rte. 4 to Commerce Park Rd., watch out for crews in a moving operation for striping, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Lincoln:
Rte. 146 North, at the Wilbur Ave. on-ramp, right lane closed with temporary exit closure for construction, Wed. and Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

North Kingstown: Rte. 1 North, from Bridgetown Rd. to the median of Rte. 4 North, left lane closures in a moving operation for mowing, Wed. night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

North Kingstown: Rte. 4 North and South, over Lafayette Rd., alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Weather permitting; striping scheduled Tues. and Wed. nights.

North and South Kingstown:

Temporary Road Closures

Cranston: Rte. 12 (Park Ave.) East at the Park Ave. Bridge over the Pocasset River, from Gansett Ave. to Dyer Ave./Budlong Rd., is closed for bridge demolition through December 2019. Follow signed detour.

Providence: Blackstone St. East and West, from Allens Ave. to Eddy St., is currently closed. Local access to the Women and Infants Breast Health Ctr. will be maintained. Get Detour Map »

Providence: Dorrance St., east of Dyer St. will be closed for construction through June 2019.

Extended Lane Closures

Providence: The left lane is closed for bridge repairs through late Summer on Providence Place and Promenade St., at their intersection with Park Place and the rear entrance to Providence Place Mall.

Extended Shoulder Closures

East Providence: Effective Sat. June 8, the right shoulder will remain closed for bridge work through Fri. June 21 along North Broadway, from Wilmarth Ave. to Dewey Ave.

New Traffic Pattern/Truck Detour

Pawtucket: Left turn restricted for truck traffic from Fountain St. North to East St. West for bridge work through August 2019. Follow signed detour. Travel on East St. under I-95 is one-way in each direction during this same time period.

East Providence: Rte. 114 North, from the Wampanoag Trail to the Horton Farm Bridge, alternating lane closures for milling, Sun - Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Delays possible.

Scituate/Johnston: The Blanchard Sawmill Bridge, carrying Winsor Ave. over the Moswansicut Brook, is currently closed. Follow signed detour using Hopkins Ave., Rte. 6 (Hartford Pike) and Rte. 116 (West Greenville Rd.)

Temporary Road Closure

Scituate: Rte. 6 West, from Rte. 101 to Rte. 102, is closed for construction through the end of June 2019. Rte. 6 East will close Sun.-Thurs. nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., but remain open during daytime hours and on weekends. Follow signed detour.

Charlestown/Richmond: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by temporary traffic signals, for bridge work, 24 hours a day on Rte. 112 North and South, from Butter Lane to Carolina Mill Lane. Expect delays.

Hopkinton: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by a temporary traffic signal for bridge work 24 hours per day on Mechanic St. North and South, under the I-95 overpass.

West Greenwich:
Rte. 3 East and West, from Burnt Sawmill Rd. to Kitts Corner Rd., travel lanes reduced from 4 to 2 and eastbound and westbound traffic shifted to the west side of the Big River Bridge for construction through Spring 2019.

West Greenwich: Rte. 102 (Victory Hwy.) North and South, over I-95 at the Victory Hwy. Bridge, lane shift and shoulder closures remain in place for construction, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Motorists on Route 102 North and Route 102 South are now utilizing the new Northbound bridge as we rebuild the Southbound one.

West Bay

Upcoming Temporary Bridge Closure

Coventry/Foster: Effective Wed. June 19, the bridge carrying Barbs Hill Rd. over the Moosup River, just north of Vaughn Hollow Rd. at Potter Rd., is scheduled to close for replacement through late October 2019. Follow signed detour.

Temporary Road Closure

East Greenwich: Shippeetown Rd. South, from Crompton Rd. to Division Rd., is closed for bridge work through the end of July 2019.  Northbound traffic will not be affected. Follow signed detour.

Warwick:
Rte. 117 East at Rte. 2, road closed for bridge demolition through mid-Summer. Follow signed detour.

Coventry: Old Summit Rd. East and West, from Rte. 117 to Log Bridge Rd., alternating lane closures possible in a moving operation for construction, Wed.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Coventry:
