Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge, East Providence/Providence

New Traffic Pattern: Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence are open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence/Providence: Up to two lanes closed for concrete expansion joint replacement on I-195 West, from Exit 2 (North Broadway) to the Gano St. on-ramp to I-195 West, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence/East Providence: I-195 East, from Exit 1A (India St) and Exit 1 B/C (Taunton Ave/Riverside) left lane closed to repair temporary barriers, Sun. – Tues. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

All of this work is part of our ongoing effort to have a high level of maintenance on this bridge. We are doing work proactively to provide a positive measure of safety.

I-95 15 Bridges Project, Providence to Warwick

Cranston: Elmwood Ave., under I-95, will be closed for bridge work, Sun. night, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. One lane will remain open on Elmwood Ave. until 9 p.m. to accommodate travel to Roger Williams Park. Follow signed detour. 

Cranston: I-95, just after the Broad St. Bridge and before the Eddy St. Bridge, alternating lane closures for survey work, Mon.-Thurs. nights, 8 p.m.-5 a.m.

Cranston: Elmwood Ave., under I-95, various lane closures anticipated for bridge work, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: The new on-ramp from Atwells Ave. to I-95 North is now open to traffic.

Providence: Providence Pl., from Harris Ave to Park St., will be closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: Charles St., from Randall St. to Corliss St. and Ashburton St., from West River St. to Charles St., alternating lane closures for abutment work, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Cumberland: I-295 North, from the Blackstone River Bridge to Exit 20 and I-295 South, from Diamond Hill Rd. to the Blackstone River Bridge, right lane closed with a lane shift for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: I-95, from Exit 35 to Exit 33, up to two lanes closed for a bridge inspection, Mon. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: I-95 North, from Atwells Ave. to the State Offices exit, watch for crews in a moving operation for a bridge inspection, Thurs. night, 9 p.m. – 3 a.m.

East Greenwich/West Greenwich/West Warwick: I-95, from Exit 18 to Exit 24, right shoulder closures for guardrail work, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Providence: I-95, over Eddy St., right shoulder closures for a bridge inspection, Wed., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work through late 2024.

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 NB through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146A at the Spring Brook bridge will be closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146 South, at Rte. 146A North, exit closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick)

Cranston: I-295 North in the vicinity of Rte. 37 and the Rte. 37 East ramp to I-295 North will be temporarily closed for steel placement, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Johnston: I-295 North, from Exit 7 to Exit 9, right lane closure for guardrail installation, electrical work, and temporary barrier removal, Sun. and Mon. nights, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.

6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Route 10

  • Rte. 10 North, from Rte. 6 East to Atwells Ave., right lane closure for electrical work, Mon. – Fri., 6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Rte. 10 South, all lanes shift to the left near the Broadway overpass.
  • Westminster Street off-ramp is temporarily closed.

Affected City Streets

  • Hartford Ave., at the Rte. 6 interchange, right lane closure for wheelchair ramp and sidewalk construction, Mon. – Fri., 6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours, Mon. – Fri.

New Traffic Pattern

Cumberland/Lincoln: All Rte. 99 traffic will shift to the right through the end of the year at the Blackstone River Bridge, carrying Rte. 99 over the Blackstone River.

Providence: All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right through December 2024.

Temporary Exit/Ramp Closures

Cranston: Rte. 37 East, at Exits 1A/B (I-295), exits closed for brush cutting, Mon. night, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Lincoln: The on-ramps from Breakneck Hill Rd. to Rte. 146 remain closed for bridge work until further notice. Follow signed detour.

Overnight

Lincoln: Rte. 146, before and after the Twin River Rd. Bridge, alternating lane closures with possible rolling roadblocks for steel beam installation, Thurs. night, 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

Weekday

Cranston: Rte. 37 East, from Glenn Hill Dr. to Exit 1E (Pontiac Ave.), left lane closed for electrical work, Thurs., 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 South, from I-295 to Exit 7 (Rte. 116), sign work behind barrier, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. 

Providence: Rte. 6, from Francis St. to Dean St., alternating lane closures for a bridge inspection, Thurs., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

East Providence: Gas main installation will require one-way alternating lane closures starting at Rte. 114 (Wampanoag Tl.) from Pawtucket Ave. at Norton St. to Tripps Ln., then moving to Veterans Memorial Pkwy. at South Broadway, to Lions Ave., weekdays, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., through the fall.

Northern R.I. & Blackstone Valley

New Traffic Patterns

Burrillville: Rte. 102, from Central St. to East Ave., at the Lapham and Pascoag River Bridges, is now open. Minor construction activity with limited traffic impacts is expected over the next few weeks.

Burrillville: A temporary traffic signal and alternating traffic on Rte. 7, between Dion Dr. and Reynolds Mill St., is in place to repair a retaining wall through the end of the year. Seek alternate routes.

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: We have installed a new traffic pattern for bridge repairs at the Moosup Valley Rd. Bridge, between Potter Road and the Tyler Free Library. There is one lane of traffic with alternating direction controlled by a temporary traffic signal through spring 2026.

Weekday

North Providence/North Smithfield: Rte. 7, from Pound Hill Rd. to Brook Farm Rd., alternating lane closures for road work, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Scituate: Rte. 6, at the Gleaner Chapel Rd. overpass, alternating lane closures with a lane shift for a bridge inspection, Wed., 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
