Interstate Highway Restrictions

I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge Rehabilitation

As part of the I-295/Rte. 6 Bridge rehabilitation project, motorists are experiencing the following changes:

I-295 North and Rte. 6 West:

  • Closure of the northbound service road. Access maintained to Exits 9A and 9C. Follow signed detour.
  • Closure of Exit 9B. Follow signed detour.
  • Lane restrictions from two to one on the ramp from Rte. 6 West to I-295 North. Delays anticipated.

I-295 South, Rte. 6 East and Rte. 6A (Hartford Ave.):

  • Closure of the southbound service road.  Access maintained to Exits 9C and 9A. Follow signed detour.
  • Minor delays anticipated on ramp from Rte. 6 East to I-295 South given closure of southbound service road.
  • Closure of on-ramp from Hartford Ave. West to I-295 South. Left turn access off Hartford Ave. to I-295 South used by Hartford Ave. East traffic.

Please note: At the new traffic pattern on I-295 South, make sure you stay on the highway for Exit 9A for Route 6 to Providence. Don't take the first exit (9C), which is now Hartford Avenue only.

Temporary Exit Closures

Providence/East Providence: As part of ongoing repairs to the Washington Bridge Westbound, Exit 3 (Gano St.) off of I-195 West is closed through Fall 2019. Follow signed detour.

Weekend

I-195 Hopkinton: I-95 North and South, from Exit 2 to Exit 3, left lane closed for construction work, Sat. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Overnight

Cranston/Warwick: I-295 North and South, from Rte. 113 (East Ave.) to Putnam Pike; Airport Connector East, from I-95 to Post Rd., partial left and right lane closures in a moving operation for Exit renumbering, Sun.-Wed. nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Cumberland:
I-295 North and South, from Exit 20 to Exit 22, left and center lane shifts in place for construction work, Wed.-Thurs. nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Please note: there will be two travel lanes in North and South. This will be ongoing until Summer of 2019.

East Providence:
I-195 East, from Exit 6 to the Horton Farm Bridge, and I-195 West, from the Mass. line to Pawtucket Ave., alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun.-Thurs. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

East Providence:
I-195 East, from Exit 4 to Exit 6, alternating lane closures for striping, Mon. night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-195 Providence:
I-95 South and North, from Exit 20 to Exit 18, alternating lane closures for striping, Sun. night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-195 Providence:
I-95 North, at Exit 19, alternating lane closures for signage removal, Tues. night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I-195 West Greenwich: I-95 North and South, from Exit 5A to Exit 5B, short-duration rolling roadblocks for utility line removal, Wed. night from midnight to 3 a.m.

Weekday

Cumberland: I-295 North and South, from Exit 20 to Exit 22, left and center lane shifts in place for bridge work, Mon. and Tues. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Please note: there will be two travel lanes in North and South. This will be ongoing until Summer of 2019.

I-195 Hopkinton: I-95 North and South, from Exit 2 to Exit 3, left lane closed for construction work, Sun.-Mon. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Johnston: I-295 North and South, at Exit 10, ramp narrowing for survey work Wed. from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ongoing Traffic Pattern

Providence/East Providence: I-195 West and East, from the Washington Bridge to the Mass. line, lane shifts in place.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

6/10 Interchange Project

As part of the 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction Project, motorists are experiencing the following changes:

  • Rte. 6 East, all traffic shifted to the left just after the Hartford Ave. exit. Both eastbound and westbound lanes are narrowed and located on the westbound side of the highway.
  • Rte. 6 East at Broadway, exit closed for construction for approximately 24 months. Follow signed detour.
  • Rte. 10 North, from Union Ave. to the Tobey St. overpass, traffic shifts to the temporary Rte. 10 North and temporary Westminster St. ramp for approximately 24 months.
  • Traffic shifts to the right on Rte. 6 West, from the Tobey St. overpass to Hartford Ave. for approximately 12 months.
  • Traffic shifts on Broadway, from Barton St. to Olneyville Square for approximately 12 months.
  • Traffic shifts on the Broadway and Westminster Street bridges over the highway

Daytime work anticipated behind barrier at the 6/10 Interchange.

Weekend

Narragansett: Rte. 1 South, from the Rte. 108 off-ramp to the Scarborough exit, and Rte. 1 North, from Woodruff Ave. to the on-ramp from Rte. 108, right lane and shoulder closures for bridge work, Sat. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New Traffic Pattern

Lincoln/Cumberland: Rte. 99 South, on the ramp to Route 146 South, left lane closed with all traffic shifted to the right.  Crews are working weekdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Overnight

Johnston: Rte. 6A, at the I-295/Rte. 6 Interchange, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Sun.-Wed. nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Lincoln:
Rte. 146 South, at Breakneck Hill Rd., left lane closed bridge work, Sun.-Wed. nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

North Smithfield:
Rte. 146 North and South, from the Forestdale Bridge to Old Great Road Bridge, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Tues.-Wed. nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Weekday

Johnston: Rte. 6 East and West, under I-295 North and South, alternating lane closures for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146 North and South, from the Rte. 146A off-ramp to the Pound Hill Rd. off-ramp, and Rte. 146 South, from the on-ramp to Rte. 146A to the Rte. 104 off-ramp, alternating lane and shoulder closures for bridge work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Temporary Ramp Closures

Temporary Bridge Closures

East Providence: The Lyon Avenue Bridge over I-195, from School St. to Freeborn Ave., is currently closed. Follow signed detour via Purchase St.

Providence: The Bath St. East Bridge, which spans the Woonasquatucket River and carries two-way traffic between Kinsley Ave./Providence Place and Promenade St., is currently closed. Get Detour Maps »

Temporary Road Closures

Providence: Rte. 14 (Plainfield St.) East and West, from Leban St. to Atwood St., road closed for bridge demolition, Mon. and Tues. nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Follow signed detour.

Providence: Blackstone St. East and West, from Allens Ave. to Eddy St., is currently closed. Local access to the Women and Infants Breast Health Ctr. will be maintained. Get Detour Map »

Providence: Dorrance St., east of Dyer St. will be closed for construction effective Monday, May 7 through June 2019.

Ongoing Traffic Pattern

East Providence: The right lane of the East Shore Expressway, starting before the Horton Farm Bridge, is currently closed through the end of 2018.

Weekday

Cranston: Rte. 2 North and South, from Sockanossett Cross Rd. to Park Ave., alternating lane closures with the right lane closed in a moving operation for drainage work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cranston: Rte. 12 East and West, from Dyer Ave. to Old Park Ave., alternating lane closures for drainage work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Please note: no work on Tues.

: Rte. 138 (East Main Rd.) East and West, from Boyds Lane to Turnpike Ave., shoulder closures for traffic signal and maintenance work, Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Please note: one lane of traffic in each direction will be open.

Portsmouth:Rte. 24 North and South, just South of the Sakonnet River Bridge to Rte. 114 (West Main Rd.), shoulder closures in a moving operation for sign installation, Mon. from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Temporary Bridge Closures

Cumberland: The Town-owned Howard Rd. Bridge, which carries Howard Rd. over Abbott Run, is currently closed. Please follow signed detour via Abbot Run Valley Rd. in Cumberland or from Paine Rd. in Massachusetts. More information is available here

Smithfield: Rte. 116 (Smith Ave.) East and West, at the intersection of Smith Ave. and Church St., alternating lane closures for milling and repaving, Mon. from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cumberland: Old Diamond Hill Rd., from Home Ave. to Diamond Hill Rd., is currently closed to motorists to become a walkable path as part of the Diamond Hill Road project.

New Traffic Pattern

Hopkinton: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by a temporary traffic signal for bridge work 24 hours per day on Mechanic St. North and South, under the I-95 overpass.

Overnight

North Kingstown/East Greenwich/Westerly: Rte. 4 North and South, from Oak Hill Rd. to I-95; Rte. 78 East and West, from Conn. line to Post Rd.; Rte. 403 East and West, from Rte. 4 to Roger Williams Way, partial left and right lane closures in a moving operation for Exit renumbering, Sun.-Wed. nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Weekday

Charlestown: Rte. 2 North and South, from Rte. 1 to Rte. 112, partial right lane closure in a moving operation for maintenance work, Mon.-Fri. from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Continuing

Charlestown/Richmond: Motorists are experiencing an alternating one-way traffic pattern controlled by temporary traffic signals, for bridge work, 24 hours a day on Rte. 112 North and South, from Butter Lane to Carolina Mill Lane. Expect delays.

Hopkinton/Richmond: Rte. 91 (Church St.) East and West at the Wood River Bridge, shoulder closures with a double lane shift for bridge work, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Fall 2018.

West Greenwich:
Rte. 3 East and West, from Burnt Sawmill Rd. to Kitts Corner Rd., travel lanes reduced from 4 to 2 and eastbound and westbound traffic shifted to the west side of the Big River Bridge for construction through December 2018.

West Greenwich: Rte. 102 (Victory Hwy.) North and South, over I-95 at the Victory Hwy. Bridge, lane shift and shoulder closures remain in place for construction, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
