Interstate Highway Restrictions

Washington Bridge & I-195, East Providence/Providence

Bypass lanes for I-195 West traffic from East Providence to Providence remain open. This temporary traffic pattern allows three lanes of travel eastbound and three lanes of travel westbound – all operating on the eastbound Washington Bridge. Expect delays.

East Providence: Waterfront Dr. under the Washington Bridge, alternating one-way traffic for installation of sensors for the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system cabinets, Mon., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

All of this work is part of our ongoing effort to have a high level of maintenance on this bridge. We are doing work proactively to provide a measure of safety.

I-95 North Viaduct, Providence

Providence: I-95 North motorists are using a new traffic pattern after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall with a newly relocated Exit 38, about one mile south of its former location. RIDOT has posted numerous signs to guide motorists to their destinations.

Providence: Providence Pl., from Harris Ave. to Park St. will be closed for bridge demolition, Sat. night (March 15), 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Providence: Various ramps within the I-95/Exit 37 interchange will be closed, then reopened when no longer needed, for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Providence: I-95, from Exit 36B to Exit 39, alternating lane closures for barrier and overhead signage installation, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Providence: Providence Pl., from Harris Ave. to Park St., and Promenade St., from Park St. to Holden St. will be closed for bridge demolition, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Weekend

Smithfield/Johnston: Crews will be working in a moving operation on various ramps along I-295 for litter clean up at the Rte. 44, Rte. 7, Rte. 6 and Rte. 5 interchanges, Sat., (March 15), 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Overnight

Cranston/Providence: I-95 South, under Rte. 10, and at the Providence Viaduct, watch for our crews in a moving operation for bridge work, Tues. night, 9 p.m.-4 a.m.

Smithfield/Cumberland: I-295 North under Rte. 7 (Douglas Pk.) between the off and on ramps, and I-295 under Rte. 114 (Diamond Hill Rd.) between the Exit 22 on and off ramps alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Warwick: I-95, from Rte. 117 to Rte. 4, single lane closures in a moving operation for drainage work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Warwick: I-95 South, from I-295 to Rte. 4, right lane closed (Tues. night), and left lane closed (Wed. and Thurs. nights) for survey work, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Weekday

Providence/Pawtucket: I-95, from Exit 33 to the Mass. Line, left lane closures in a moving operation for litter removal and drainage work, Tues., 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Continuing

Cumberland: I-295, over Rte. 122 (Mendon Rd.), at the Mendon Rd. Bridge, travel lanes reduced from three to two for bridge work.

Other Limited Access Highway Restrictions

Reconstruction of Route 146 (Lincoln/North Smithfield)

North Smithfield: A lane split is in place on Rte. 146 North just before the Sayles Hill Rd. intersection. Rte. 146 NB through-traffic will continue straight over the new portion of the Sayles Hill Rd. flyover in the left lane. Sayles Hill Rd. traffic, local turns, and wide loads are directed to the right lane. Both lanes continue north through Rte. 146.

Upcoming Traffic Changes

Lincoln: I-295 North and South Exits 18 A and B off-ramps will be closed when needed for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Lincoln: I-295 at Exits 18A/18B, alternating lane closures for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 146 North and South service roads to I-295 North and South will be closed when needed for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Lincoln: Rte. 146, from Exit 7B to Exit 8C will be detoured when needed onto the Rte. 146 service roads for steel beam placement, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detours.

Lincoln: Rte. 146, from Rte. 116 to Rte. 99, alternating lane closures with rolling roadblocks for bridge work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146 South on-ramp to Rte. 146A (Exit 10), and Rte. 146A South, from Dowling Village Blvd. to Rte. 146, will be closed for steel beam placement, Fri. night (March 14) through Sat. night (March 15), 9 p.m. – 9 p.m. Follow signed detours.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146 South ramp to Rte. 146A (Exit 10) will be closed for bridge construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146A South, from Dowling Village Blvd. to Rte. 146 will be closed for road construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Follow signed detour.

North Smithfield: Rte. 146, from Exit 10 to the Mass. line, alternating lane closures for road construction, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Lincoln: I-295 North, at the Rte. 146 interchange, lanes remain shifted to the left.

North Smithfield: Travel lanes have shifted at the Rte. 146/Rte. 146A (Exit 10) interchange, with the following changes:

  • Rte. 146 North: both travel lanes have shifted to the right
  • Rte. 146 North, at Exit 10 (Rte. 146A): ramp narrows at the exit from two lanes to one
  • Rte. 146A South, at the off-ramp to Rte. 146 South: travel lanes are narrow

Route 37 Improvements (Cranston/Warwick/Johnston)

Cranston: I-295 in the vicinity of Exit 3A (Rte. 37), crane removal behind barrier, Tues. and Wed., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Cranston: Rte. 37 West in the vicinity of Exit 1B (I-295 North), road construction behind barrier, Mon. – Fri., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Johnston: I-295 North in the vicinity of Exit 6 (Plainfield Pk.) and Exit 7 (Scituate Ave.), right lane closed for overhead sign construction, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

6/10 Interchange Project (Providence)

Route 10

  • Rte. 10 North, from the Flyover bridge to Tobey St., alternating lane closures for drainage work, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Rte. 10 South, from Atwells Ave. to Broadway, left lane closed for drainage work, Tues. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. 
  • Rte. 10 South, all lanes shift to the left near the Broadway overpass.
  • Westminster Street off-ramp is temporarily closed.

Affected City Streets

  • Traffic shifted on the Broadway and Westminster St. bridges over the highway.

Project-wide

  • Periodic one-lane closures possible along Rte. 10 and Rte. 6 on off-peak hours, Mon. – Fri.

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Cumberland/Lincoln: All Rte. 99 traffic will shift to the right through the end of the year at the Blackstone River Bridge, carrying Rte. 99 over the Blackstone River.

Providence: All traffic on Rte. 146 under the Hawkins St. Bridge has shifted to the right.

Temporary Exit/Ramp Closures

Lincoln: The on-ramps from Breakneck Hill Rd. to Rte. 146 remain closed for bridge work until further notice. Follow signed detour.

Weekend

Tiverton: Rte. 24 South, from the Mass. line to Main Rd., watch for our crews in the center median and right shoulder in a moving operation for litter removal, Sat., (March 15), 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Overnight

North Kingstown: Rte. 4 South, from Rte. 102 to Oak Hill Rd., left lane closed for bridge work, Sun. – Thurs. nights, 10 p.m. – 6 a.m.  

North Kingstown: Rte. 403 West, from Post Rd. to Davisville Rd., right lane closed for survey work, Sun., and Mon. nights, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Weekday

Cranston/Providence: Rte. 10 North, between the Niantic Ave. off- and on-ramps, right shoulder closed for drainage work, Tues., 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Lincoln: Rte. 99, from the Rte. 146 split to Mendon Rd., right shoulder closure in a moving operation for litter removal, Mon., 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

East Bay Bike Path Bridges

Barrington/Warren: Rte. 114, at the Barrington and Warren Bridges, the northbound boardwalks remain open during construction of the bike path bridges, providing a continuous off-road path around the construction area.

Northern R.I. & Blackstone Valley

Ongoing Traffic Patterns

Burrillville: A temporary traffic signal and alternating traffic on Rte. 7, between Dion Dr. and Reynolds Mill St., is in place to repair a retaining wall through the end of 2025. Seek alternate routes.

Cumberland: We have shifted traffic onto the newly constructed south side of the Mendon Road Bridge on Rte. 122. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the bridge through fall 2025.

Foster: Moosup Valley Road, between Potter Road and the Tyler Free Library, one lane of traffic with alternating direction controlled by a temporary traffic signal through spring 2026 for bridge work.

Upcoming Bridge Closure

Burrillville: Beginning Fri. night, March 21, the Glendale Bridge, carrying Victory Hwy. over the Branch River, between Main St. and Snake Hill Rd., is scheduled to close for reconstruction through mid-summer 2025. Follow signed detour.

Weekday

Cumberland: Broad St. at #45, alternating lane closures for curb and sidewalk work, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Cumberland: Rte. 114 (Diamond Hill Rd.), from Rte. 120 to the Bentley Field Complex, alternating one-way traffic with driveways/walkways blocked and street parking restricted for pile driving, Tues., and Fri., and drainage work, Wed., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Cumberland: Second Ave., from Vivian Ave. to Seamans St., alternating one-way traffic for a bridge inspection, Wed. and Thurs., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
